Reiki and Business Meetings?

Reiki goes corporate: here is what happened when I started using Reiki in secret in the business setting...

Overall the research suggests that, among other things, Reiki is very effective in triggering the relaxation response in the body. So here is the question: Why are we waiting to use this modality? Why aren't we applying Reiki in new ways into our daily lives? Our bodies are in a stress response nearly constantly in the environment of our modern lives, even when cognitively we do not realize it so there is absolutely a precedent for regular application.
I started contemplating this shortly after I was trained as a Reiki Master. I was working a corporate job that I loved, but it was very stressful at times. Sometimes before big meetings where I had to present a business case, for example, or knew there was going to be a lot of push-back or hostility during a meeting, I would escape to a quiet room before the meeting and treat myself with Reiki. This became an embedded routine in my work life for years and of course I didn't speak of this with anyone...until I did. It wasn't premeditated and it sort of just slipped out but after a particularly difficult meeting, a colleague came up to me and asked me "Wow, there was a lot of rough stuff being thrown at you during that meeting. How did you stay so calm?" Of course I laughed and said she has known me long enough to know that my baseline emotional state is calm however, when I know I am going into a particularly difficult situation, I will treat myself with Reiki ahead of time. As soon as that came out of my mouth, I had immediate doubts about how that information was going to be received. The sense of calm that I had during the meeting seemed to quickly dissipate into a moment of internal panic. Why did I say that? What is she going to say? Is my professional reputation going to be questioned now after this? But then an unexpected thing happened: she was totally intrigued and started asking me a ton of questions! Phew-now THAT was a close one!
That colleague is now also a Reiki Master and not only uses Reiki at work on herself but she and I have often called on each other if we need a mini-session as it definitely helps to have someone else treating you. In time, we ended up creating a bit of a secret work club as word started to get around. I would always joke that we were the Rogue Reiki Team since there were certainly no clinical protocols governing what we were doing but, given that we were seeing efficacy and had no safety concerns about using Reiki this way, we continued. And we also laughed and had fun with it as much as possible! In time, everyone knew who the Reiki Masters were to reach out to when needed. The massage therapist who would come in once a week to the corporate wellness center was also a Reiki Master so, soon enough, he joined our crew as well.
This whole situation really got me thinking. In the current model of use, Reiki is typically applied either clinically (usually in the oncology setting) or privately with individual practitioners over about an hour in an environment not unlike going for a massage. But what if there was a way to apply Reiki in other ways that could enhance well-being on a regular basis? From my experience with our Rogue Reiki group, even 10-15 minute mini-sessions were efficacious so what if we changed the whole nature of the therapeutic interaction and applied Reiki in a new way? It was exactly this thinking that lead to the integration of Reiki into the Wellness Journey Club in new, fun ways.
